Edit
The Kantai Collection version of the IJN fleet carrier Akagi. Named after Mount Akagi. Literally, this means "Red Castle."
Akagi has long, straight brown hair and brown eyes. She is typically seen wearing a muneate over white and red japanese clothes in a nontraditional miko style with a red tasuki. She also wears an apron based on the stern end of her flight deck, with the kana "ア" inscribed on it. She wears white thighhighs.
Her combat gear includes notably less armor or machinery than most shipgirls. She holds a traditional Kyuudou bow and has arrows in a quiver slung over her shoulder by a strap which also has a replica of her ship's mast. On her right arm, she has her flight deck worn like a shield. She wears geta-like sandals that have carrier-like decks on them.
She obtained her second remodels on the May 21st 2019 (Spring 2019 Event) update, termed Kai Ni and Kai Ni E and shows (along with the Ise-classes' own remodels) how Shibafu has improved. She keeps the same basic outfit with a few new details and changes, her skirt is now unambiguously a shorterned hakama, her sleeves gained ribbon trimming while her thighhighs have been turned into tabi with black thighhigh gaiters. Her gear is built up from base with, at Kai Ni, two extra quivers on each sides of her hip, a black flight deck, a black yumi and more modern AA guns (long 10cm guns). For Kai Ni E, she is dimly lit for night operations, reflecting her new ability to fight in night battles. Her eyes gain a slight glow (although this can be attributed to how the iris interacts with light) and she also replaces her AA gun and her left quiver for a sword. These remodels are essentially hypothetical organic remodels of sorts, reflecting what she could have been if she didn't sink at Midway, if the fortunes of war had improved.
For a promotion with Nakau, a restaurant franchise famed for it's Oyakodon (Chicken & Egg Bowl), Akagi has a new recolored costume with a red top as well as a black skirt, undertop and thighhighs (the same colors as the waitresses at Nakau). The kana on her flight deck apron also changed to "ナ" for "Nakau" but it also led to jokes where she had renamed to "Nakagi". Of course, she appears to be holding a serving of Nakau's Oyakodon. This portrait (without the changed kana) was implemented in the October 5th 2016 update.
For the 130th anniversary of the opening of the Sasebo Naval District, she was given a new school girl portrait on Twitter. Dressed up in a navy blue serafuku with a white neckerchief and a name tag, this portrait proved to be very popular with fans also portraying Kaga in the same outfit (Although she was originally built at Kure, the Akagi that participated in the war (as well as Kaga) was remodeled at Sasebo).
The historical IJN Akagi was one of the oldest IJN carriers, and therefore carried the most elite air crews, leading to the KanColle Akagi calling herself "The Pride of the First Carrier Division." The IJN Akagi was notably remodeled many times, at one time having "triple flight decks" that would theoretically allow planes to take off in a hurry from inside the hangar itself. Since the runway was so short (and crowded by the superfluous cruiser-sized cannons) that no combat aircraft could use it, and it created structural vulnerabilities, this idea was abandoned and Akagi was remodeled to a single flight deck design. Like Ryuujou, Akagi was also originally a flattop with no island.
The IJN Akagi served with distinction during the early conflict with China, led the Attack on Pearl Harbor, and assisted in sinking ships of the British Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean Raid. She met a fiery and infamous end in the disastrous Battle of Midway, after the Arashi led a squadron of American aircraft to her and the Kaga, and a single bomb during refueling managed to detonate several of the Akagi's fully armed and fueled torpedo bombers (and their torpedoes) and disable her damage control at once, resulting in a day-long fire gradually consuming the whole ship. She was ultimately scuttled by torpedoes by four of her escorting destroyers.
Akagi is often paired with Kaga - either as lovers or as platonic life partners - as they formed the 1st Carrier Division. Akagi is often used as a foil to the strict, formal, taciturn, and militaristic Kaga, being more feminine and easygoing, sometimes to a comedic fault.
Midway Hime is suspected to be her abyssal counterpart/form.
Akagi has a notable fan (or in the anime, canon) reputation as a big eater. Because she is an early quest reward, players can get her long before any other carrier, when they only have resource-sipping destroyers or light cruisers, and long before they can afford the resources to field her. To make matters worse, during an early version of Kantai Collection, a bug apparently existed that made Akagi actually consume ten times this already outsized quantity of bauxite. Although some ships (Yamato and Musashi in particular) are noted for consuming even more, Akagi still remains the most memetically famous for this. Kaga is frequently paired up with her as a hyper-serious partner-in-crime.
Akagi, along with Fubuki, have the honor of being the characters in the first Kantai Collection image submitted to Danbooru. post #1403682
